Nestled in the picturesque fishing town of Brixham in South Devon, Northfield Foundry Ltd has been a cornerstone of the local economy and a supplier of high-quality cast iron products since 1948.

Owned by the Rotolok Group, Northfield Foundry continues to thrive, ensuring the continuous production of Rotolok’s valves and bulk handling products. Northfield also manufactures a steady supply of iron castings essential for various industries, including maritime, food, and pump sectors.

Rotolok has just completed a significant investment in a state-of-the-art melting facility. This strategic move ensures enhanced operational efficiency and product quality.

Recognising the need for innovation and amidst increasing environmental awareness, a study was completed to phase out the coke fuelled cupola. After overcoming planning and electrical supply challenges, construction commenced in mid-2023 leading to a brand-new melt shop complete with dry scrap storage bays, overhead cranage and electric induction furnaces. This new development is positioned at the end of the foundry in a purpose-built facility.

The new facility became operational in April 2024, and early results indicate significant improvements. The cleaner environment has been well received and energy efficiencies are already apparent- making it one of the most advanced melt shops in the UK.

Andrew Drage manager at furnace supplier Meltech said: “We are very proud of our association with Northfield Foundry and Rotolok. A complete new melt shop is something that rarely happens in the UK these days, this investment proves that money carefully spent can reap dividends for those who take the plunge.”

As Simon Bates, Rotolok’s Technical Director explains “The environmental benefits are huge, and it has been a transformational project. The new furnace will more than double our current production capacity, allowing us to expand our alloy range from grey iron to SG and steel. Our policy of having full control of our supply chain is essential for our business for the complete manufacture of quality products, contributing to deliveries with the industry’s fastest lead times.”
